ADC SUMMER 2006 - Travel Section 4 - Singapore Slingback
Our trip to Japan was topped off by a 3 day stopover in Singapore which is an amazing blend of colonial, modern, green, glass, concrete and sculpture. The cultural mix is intriguing with influences from China, Malaya, India, Australasia and Europe with religious tolerance of Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam (there is also a great following of the true religion of Manchester United).
Like all good tourists we visited Raffles Hotel for afternoon tea and in all honesty it was something of a disappointment. Perhaps we were expecting too much. We got “dressed up” as we were told there was a dress code only to find that meant no shorts and so people were allowed in wearing jeans and t-shirts – the days of the Raj have disappeared forever (not necessarily a good thing).

Try having the buffet in the Billiard Room restaurant next time you're there. The food is fantastic and at a very reasonable cost and the staff really give first class service. Gin slings in the Long Bar are also to be recommended, but watch out for the monkey nut shells on the floor - I never did get to the bottom of that
